Field clinical trials conducted by Sustainable Nutrition International in 2012-14 confirmed the nutritional potency of NutraIso® formulations in remediating chronic malnutrition in infants who were exclusively breastfed by mothers consuming the bioactive nutraceutical formulations.


The 2012-14 NutraIso clinicals were conducted in collaboration with the Government of Guatemala. Overall, 165 lactating mothers were screened and tested over the 135-day trial period for each group. Participating mothers’ daily nutrition was supplemented with 40 grams of the NutraIso formulation, and their infants were breastfed exclusive of any other nutrition for the 135-day period. All participating mothers received monthly health testing at the regional clinic in Comapa, located in the Southeastern rural district of Guatemala where chronic malnutrition is prevalent in infants. The breastfed infants were monitored monthly according to World health Organization indicators, including weight-for-height, body length-for-age, weight-for-age, cephalic perimeter-for-age, and body mass index-for-age.


The results proved to be significant when indexed against WHO metrics in all measurements excerpt weight-for-height, which is often more influenced by genetics over generations of time. However, the four principal indictors for infant development, weight-for-age, body mass index-for-age, length-for-age, and cephalic perimeter showed statistically significant improvements when measured by the
Student ‘T’ Test (p<0.01), increasing 291.9%, 202.0%, 30.7%, and 56.6% respectively.


These are all important indicators of the importance early intervention with bioactive nutrition can play in remediating chronic malnutrition in infants, and the positive role indigenous NutraIso production can play in nutrient deficit rice producing regions worldwide. Over 50 million metric tons of rice bran byproduct is available from the rice milling process worldwide, with substantial volumes available in developing countries where rice is a staple human food.
